The Camas-Washougal Port of Commissioners approved a resolution at its April 5 board meeting supporting the Washougal School District in its upcoming replacement levy vote.
Echoing similar sentiments that the school district has shared regarding the levy — which would replace an expiring measure to fund additional staff salaries, athletics programs and other extracurricular activities — the commissioners outlined the schools’ important roles in the community as a business engine.
“At its heart, the Port is an economic development organization. Nothing is more important than education, it’s where it all starts,” said commissioner John Spencer.
If the ballot measures fail once more, the Washougal School District said it will need to make an estimated 20 percent budget reduction in 2024.
Ballots for the special election were mailed on April 7, and voters must return their ballot to a drop box or have the ballot postmarked by April 25.
