Weather Eye: Planning Easter egg hunts? Don’t forget raincoat, boots

Yeah, I’m still shaking my head. Those warm days this Easter weekend that forecast models showed on Monday have evaporated and we will endure more cold and wet weather. Highs will be in the 50s, which is better than the 40s but still well below normal. So far this month Vancouver is running 6 degrees below average and slightly wetter than average. That trend will continue.

Forecast charts have delayed any brief sunny and warm weather until later next week, but I wouldn’t hold your breath on that prediction. After all, April was expected to be colder and wetter than average anyway. So, what about outdoor egg hunts this weekend? Saturday could be wet with rain all day. I’m basing this on forecast charts Wednesday afternoon so perhaps there may be some changes with that. As usual here in the Northwest, we have a plan B for egg hunts, right?

Good news with the Cascade snowpack with April numbers coming in well above average. The Mount Hood area is 162 percent of normal. The south Washington Cascades are 122 percent of normal. June Lake near Mount St. Helens currently has 166 inches of snow on the ground. Our local mountain peaks within eyesight of Clark County should be nice and white well into June this year.

We should start placing bets on when our first 70-degree day will be. Usually, we reach that milestone by the first day of April but records show it has been delayed until mid-May.

The unsettled weather continues today with steady rain and blustery south winds, a break Friday with a chance of showers and rainy and cool over the weekend into the beginning of next week.

Now normally if we have foul weather on spring break, it almost always turns nice and sunny the week after. You know, sunshine with highs in the 70s, cherry blossoms flying in the air and a classroom of anxious kids.

I don’t know what to tell you, I have no offer of any extended warm and dry weather that I can see coming up. I will not be climbing any trees and going out on a limb with my future forecasts.
