Letter: Bible: Our bodies belong to God

Linda Wallers complains that Marcus Lind is trying to “force his belief regarding life” on the rest of us (“Bible is silent on abortion,” Our Readers’ Views, March 25). Then, so is she. Both have merely written letters to the editor, expressing their opinion. Unfortunately, Ms. Wallers’ opinion is also that of the governor and a majority of the Legislature, i.e., the folks who make laws.

Ms. Wallers’ assertion that a baby is totally dependent on her mother while in the womb is correct. However, a newborn is also totally dependent on her mother or father for several years after birth. I’ve never seen a baby prepare their own meals.

While abortion is not specifically mentioned, there are other aspects of the Bible that bear on it. Psalm 139:13 says that God “knit (the psalmist) together in the womb.” And the Bible directly contradicts the basic rationale for abortion, i.e., that a woman can do what she wants with her body. The Bible asserts that all of our bodies belong to God (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). I would argue that there is nothing in the Bible that permits a woman to end a pregnancy at her own discretion.
