Weather Eye : Fall equinox signals arrival of autumn; no rain forecast

We welcome the official arrival of autumn later today at 6:04 p.m. with the fall equinox. That means Friday will be the first full day of fall. Our weather will be far from it, however, as we keep skies dry, and temperatures will be near normal, which is 74 degrees, but climb to 80 degrees Sunday through Tuesday.

I was driving around town Tuesday and from Camas to Felida the trees are dressing up in their fall attire already. Others are lagging but plenty of yellow, orange and red hues. I know plenty of our readers enjoy this autumn season the best. Now we will be fully in it finally. Put those extremely hot summer days behind us.

We did manage to reach 85 degrees Tuesday and 84 degrees Monday and doing outside chores it was a little muggy. The weather ahead looks OK for more outdoor projects. Staining the deck, painting the house or perhaps some construction projects, the weather is a go. The garden needs some cleaning up, you know.

Today’s average high is 74 degrees and the record high for Vancouver is 94 degrees in 1952. The record low today is 35 degrees in 1971. Our rainfall for the month remains at .07 of an inch, which isn’t that much. In 1999 we had no measurable rain the entire month of September. The wettest September was over a century ago in 1911. I had to blow the dust off the record shelf for a couple of those.

There is a slight chance of a light shower or drizzle at the coast but if you plan to head there over the weekend it will be outstanding, with highs around 70 degrees and mostly sunny skies. September is often the best month along the ocean beaches. Winds are light as well.

We sure need a good soaking rain, the vegetation is so dried out, I see many rhododendrons with their leaves curling up. Wetlands are dry and nature waits for the timely change of seasons and the beginning of the rainy season. Not yet friends. Enjoy your weekend. Happy fall!
