Clark County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man suspected of getting into the back seat of a woman’s car and threatening her with a gun Saturday evening in a Hazel Dell parking lot.

“An elderly female customer called 911 to report a homeless male had gotten into the back seat of her car while she was seated in the driver seat, threatened her with a gun, then fled on foot,” according to a Sunday night statement from the sheriff’s office.

Deputies responded at about 6 p.m. to Fred Meyer, 7700 N.E. Highway 99, and began searching the area. The victim told deputies the suspect said, “I have a gun to your head. Just drive or I’ll shoot you in the head,” the sheriff’s office said.

She told the suspect to get out of her car several times. The man apologized, saying he was “homeless and hungry,” then got out of her car and ran away, according to the statement.

The suspect was not located in the immediate area, according to the sheriff’s office. But a person matching the suspect’s description was stopped and detained a few blocks away. The woman was able to identify the suspect.

David Ryel was unarmed at the time of his arrest. He was booked into the Clark County Jail on suspicion of first-degree attempted kidnapping and felony harassment.
