Weather Eye: Break out the warmer clothes, as cold air mass arrives Tuesday

Nothing like wet leaves adhered to the concrete driveway. Saturday’s damp weather made cleaning up the yard a bit of a task, with no sunbreaks to dry things out. But hey, it is the end of October. That 86-degree high temperature two weeks ago today is becoming a distant memory.

Saturday as I worked on the leaf detail, I wore my sweatshirt, but it was too warm and didn’t fend off the occasional light rain showers.

Our latest bout with the rain showers as of late Saturday afternoon still wasn’t enough to reach the 2-inch mark in our monthly rain tally. We would need about an inch and a half by midnight Halloween to hit the average mark for October. I doubt we’ll make it, but the weather always likes to throw me a punch when I make such bold statements.

I remarked about how my sweatshirt made me feel so warm, but we have a cold air mass arriving Tuesday, and I’m glad I have one. I may even switch to my winter fleece jacket for the first time.

Colder locations might see frost on the pumpkins — that is, if we get some overnight clearing, which I think we shall. Watch out for tender plants.

With colder air aloft, snow levels could plummet down to our higher foothills, where wildfires smoldered just days ago. Ski areas will resume an upward trend in the early snowpack. The only thing I can see beyond this week is higher freezing levels by the weekend, so rain might fall on the slopes. Maybe warmer air will stay at bay and snow will continue to accumulate. Not really the season for that yet, but who knows? This has been a weird weather year.

Take good care, and we’ll meet here again as we greet the first day of November.
