A drive-by shooting Thursday evening led to a high-speed chase from Hazel Dell to the Interstate 5 Bridge, where the victim’s ex-husband was arrested.
Robert E. Mitchell, 55, was arrested after police stopped his gold-colored sedan with a PIT maneuver as it entered Oregon, according to a news release from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s deputies were alerted at 9:45 p.m. when a deputy on patrol in Hazel Dell heard four gunshots and saw the sedan speeding along Northeast Minnehaha Street.
A minute later, a woman called 911 to report her ex-husband came to her home, where she and her two young children were at home, and apparently threw something through the door.
A second deputy arrived at the home and saw bullet strikes on the front door, a bullet hole through a window and shell casings on the asphalt.
Meanwhile, deputies were following the gold sedan, and upon hearing about the drive-by shooting, they began chasing it down Northeast St. Johns Road, onto state Highway 500. and onto Interstate 5. Speeds exceeded 80 mph and one of the officer allegedly saw the driver throw a handgun out the driver’s side window.
The handgun, a Ruger LCP .380 caliber, was located mid-span of the Interstate 5 Bridge, and was collected as evidence.
Because the pursuit ended in Oregon, Mitchell was taken to the Multnomah County Jail to be held on a number of allegations, including attempted murder, drive-by shooting, reckless endangerment and attempting to elude police.
No one was reported injured in either the chase or the shooting.
