Letter: Republican Party ignores its values

I am writing to say that my father, who was a lifelong member of the Republican Party, would be embarrassed and disgusted by much of what is happening these days.

The current Republican leadership doesn’t embrace historical Republican values, those things he believed in strongly. He embraced smaller government, a balanced budget, strong military, personal responsibility and a world-class infrastructure. The people he voted for were those who would work with their fellows across the aisle and understood the value of compromise for the greater good.

Instead what we see now is obstructionism and extreme partisanship that blocks any real progress. Personal interest and power-seeking have overcome the goals of public service that all elected officials swear to uphold. The party is being torn apart by in-fighting thanks to the past administration and those who still believe Trump’s big lie. Election deniers are running for office on the promise that they will block anything the opposing party puts forward. How is this useful?

In short, my father would categorize the Republican Party that we see today as RINOs, and would find it impossible to support many of the candidates they are putting forth.
