As I have mentioned multiple times, I have a serious crush on everything autumn. My focus in last week’s “Check It Out” column was on adult nonfiction titles, specifically those that embrace fall-related themes such as comfort food, hot tea and cozy blankets. This week I want to aim the spotlight on children’s picture books about fall leaves.
You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy the titles in this week’s list. If you love the transformation from the green of summer to the gold, orange and red of autumn, picture books are a wonderful way to celebrate the season no matter your age. If you have little ones, reading about why leaves change color can be fun to do together. The science behind the changeover is fascinating and a great lesson for young minds (and a perfect refresher for aging brains like mine). Perhaps what I enjoy most about picture books are the pictures, of course! Beautiful photos and illustrations fill the pages, and what’s better than that?
The only thing that’s missing for me is a big pile of leaves to jump into. Oh well, this also means that I won’t have a bunch of raking to do. I’ll just look at these pretty books and let my imagination do all of the jumping. At my age that’s probably for the best.
Happy autumn!
