Letter: There’s value in electric vehicles

The letter to the editor “Do the math, liberals” (Our Readers’ Views, Sept. 28) on how awful electric vehicles are inspired me to write. As a person who shopped for an EV, I can attest the value of a high odometer reading EV is adjusted in the market the same as a high odometer reading gas vehicle is adjusted. Buyers aren’t dumb, and pay a price that reflects potential maintenance.

My understanding when I registered my vehicle was that I paid an extra $100 for being an EV. For the environmental and personal benefit of not buying gasoline, that seems like a bargain to me. When I shopped for an EV, the lowest prices were in the $15,000 range. Quoting the “average” price of an EV is not very informative, as one millionaire in a group of paupers can definitely skew the “average” wealth of the group.

Lastly, I have not been stranded in my vehicle. Everything is computerized, so I can plan a trip knowing where the nearest charging station is, and my car’s computer notes how much I have in my battery. EVs are, by necessity, going to be the car of the future, so let’s learn and grow, as resisting will not change the realities.
