Weather Eye: Be thankful for our fair weather on this holiday

Happy Thanksgiving! We certainly have a basket full of blessings to think about, which leads me to my usual writing this time of the year.

I want to offer my annual Thanksgiving poem: “I look up at the sky and give thanks for the rain, hail and snows; to fulfill our needs as only our creator knows. We complain about the heat, the cold and the rain; but we’re given a variety to keep us sane. The dark clouds may come, but a rainbow will appear, to comfort and tell us our creator is near. We’re given the seasons — summer, fall, winter and spring; each with their own weather they do bring. Symbolizing a beginning, growth and death. But the wind keeps on blowing and never runs out of breath. We have acquired the knowledge of the sky, and will keep on learning; that’s no lie. As a shower that moves through and off to the east, this I would like to say at least: ‘Have a happy Thanksgiving and a wonderful feast.’”

Do you remember the weather last Thanksgiving? It certainly wasn’t sunny, with a high of 56 degrees, which is above average, but we had some scattered rain showers totaling less than a quarter inch. I do remember the weather on Thanksgiving 2016, when it rained hard all day in Clark County. A record rainfall of 2.05 inches was set in Vancouver, breaking the old record of 2.00 inches, set in 1960. Seems like every holiday has its own variety of weather from year to year.

This year, I am spending Thanksgiving week in Sunriver, Ore., which is our family tradition, but there will be no cross-country skiing this year. After snow earlier in November, it was forecast to be sunny and balmy here, with highs in the 55-to-60-degree range.

Again, best wishes and thankfulness for today. We’ll see sunshine today and a fair-weather Black Friday, with no worries if you are shopping locally from store to store. Rain returns this weekend, and hopefully it will be a good performer, unlike past events. Take good care.
