FEDERAL WAY — Campbell Deringer came to the state swimming championship with an eye on a second-place finish.
The Camas senior left the King County Aquatic Center with a pair of runner-up finishes in the Class 4A meet, taking second in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke.
Deringer said a second-place in the breaststroke was the goal, but the individual medley came as a surprise.
“It was really unexpected,” Deringer said. “The 200 IM is not my strongest event. I just went into kind of like ‘whatever happens happens.’ I think I was really relaxed, so everything just came together.”
