Campbell Deringer of Camas qualifies second in 4A 100 breaststroke at state meet

Camas’ Campbell Deringer qualified second in the 100-yard breaststroke at the 4A meet of the WIAA state swimming and diving championships Friday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Deringer, who was seeded second, held her position in Friday’s preliminary heats with a time of 1 minute, 4.59 seconds. Deringer would need to cut her time by three seconds to match the time posted by the event’s top qualifier Gillian Tu of Issaquah.

Deringer also qualified fifth for the 200 individual medley in 2:13.14.

Also reaching Saturday’s championship finals in the 4A meet was Lila McGeachy of Camas. She qualified fourth in 200 freestyle (1:59.01) and seventh in the 500 free (5:17.16).

In the 2A meet, Ridgefield’s Medea Rusu advanced to the championship finals in two events. Rusu was fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:04.36) and seventh in the 200 individual medley (2:17.80).

Also advancing to Saturday’s finals were Paige Dangleis of Hockinson (fourth, 100 free, 56.75) and McKelvey Brewer of Hudson’s Bay (seventh, 100 butterfly, 1:02.63).
