Weather Eye: Vancouver sees its first official freeze of the season

Oh, I love the sunshine in wintertime. Well, it’s not winter quite yet, but regardless, I enjoy the sunshine in late autumn as well.

The easterly winds died down Wednesday, which made it more bearable to be outside, but one could still feel a chill in the air. The sun’s angle is so low now, it is a struggle to feel penetrating warmth.

The early-morning low Wednesday in Vancouver was 30 degrees, the first official freeze of the season. Lows were well into the 20s in urban and outlying areas. I had one report of 22 degrees near Moulton Falls. There was plenty of frost on the remaining pumpkins lying around. I checked the record low for Wednesday, and surprisingly, we were only 3 degrees shy of tying the record of 27 degrees set in 1982.

We’ll keep freezing temperatures out of the forecast tonight through early Saturday as a weak weather system slides by to our south. We will receive clouds and a chance of light rain or showers. Any rainfall would be on the scant side. Outside of that, we are back into sunny skies through next Wednesday, from what I could see as I wrote this column Wednesday evening.

We’ll get back to freezing temperatures after the clouds depart and will see chilly conditions through next week. Highs in Vancouver will be 45-50 degrees and lows 30-35 degrees — all below average. Areas away from the city will drop back into the 20s overnight. We’ll also see a return of the east winds by the weekend, keeping conditions clear and crisp.

All the excitement last week with moderate to heavy snow in the ski areas has ebbed, and snow lovers are back to praying for more snow to fall. Early skiing for Thanksgiving? Not at this rate, but we still have another week to go before things need to get serious. A couple good storms can do it.

A big thank you to all our veterans out there. Friday is your day to be recognized for your faithful service to our country. I wish the weather was going to be better for you with full sunshine, but we take things in stride.

We’ll chat on Sunday. Take care.
