Weather Eye: October concludes with below-average rainfall

It is not often that we get to chat about the weather together on the first day of a new month, but here we are. We knew it was going to rain Monday, but I know a few parents that were a little anxious in the late afternoon hours with trick-or-treating about to commence. Buy hey, we’ve done this before, right?

I remember when my kids were young on wet and windy Halloweens, wet shoes and well, some of those costumes didn’t hold up well to a drenching. But it seems like it cleared at some point and the treat hunt proceeded with excitement. I was watching the radar Monday afternoon and a narrow band of moisture was stalled over the metro area.

We needed the rain to help make up for the first half of the month but as of 5 p.m. Monday, we had about 2.44 inches in the rain bucket with still an inch to catch up to average.

Colder air arrives today and rain in the mountains turns to snow with one-half foot at pass levels and a foot in the higher ski areas through early Thursday morning. Then guess what? Yep, another atmospheric river, warmer temperatures and rain on the slopes for the weekend. Typical autumn yo-yo with the snow levels.

Thanksgiving arrives early this month and many wonder what the chance of an early ski opening in the mountains is. I expect the current pattern of up-and-down freezing levels to continue but possible colder air arrives and some moderate to heavy snow could fall prior to Thanksgiving.
