Weather Eye: Enjoy break before cooler, wetter weather

The rain on Saturday and Sunday in Vancouver totaled a bit over a half-inch with higher amounts in the foothills. Pretty much as expected. Some locales may have had much more if a heavy shower wandered through. Highs were close to 60 degrees, some 10 degrees below average. It also felt a little on the humid side as well.

The rain pushed our total for the month over 4 inches, standing at 4.06 inches Monday morning. The last day of May should be a pleasant day with no rain and temperatures in the 70s. June arrives on Wednesday and despite increasing high clouds we should reach close to 80 degrees.

But enjoy it as you can because forecast charts tell us cooler, cloudier, and of course wetter weather arrives Thursday through the weekend. The weather systems will be weak with only light showers, but heavier rain could arrive by the weekend. We’ll see.

If clouds remain at bay tonight, we may be able to see the Tau Herculids meteor shower if Earth passes through the greatest portion of the comet fragment. It isn’t a sure thing but if it occurs up to 1,000 shooting stars could be seen per hour. Since there is a new moon with no moonlight, the skies will be dark. Let’s hope the skies remain clear.

Back to the city of Spokane. They finally made it to 70 degrees on Thursday, which set a record for the latest in the year. The old record was May 21, 1896. It was also 232 days since the last high of 70 degrees, breaking the old record of 226 days set in 1881 and 1882. That is a long way back, isn’t it? However, it was only a brief milestone as their high on Memorial Day was only forecast to be 60 degrees.

Last year, our Memorial Day weekend was the second warmest on record. This year is cooler and wetter than a normal Memorial Day weekend. At least Monday we had blue skies and sun breaks in between the passing white and dark cumulus clouds. A good day honoring our veterans and visiting the cemeteries.
