Despite plenty of cloudiness and a storm approaching off the coast Wednesday, we managed to creep into the low 60s, which was a welcome event, to say the least. We also were fortunate that rain held off during daylight hours. Today we will have wet weather with rain turning to showers. However, high temperatures today and Friday will lower into the 50s.
Although we are forecasting more rain and showers Saturday through Tuesday, one notable shift will be the high temperatures, which will climb back where they should be for the middle of May. Well, not every day will be 67 or 68 degrees, but at least in the 60s. Freezing levels will be higher as well.
I don’t know if skies will be clear or not Sunday evening, but as our full flower moon rises, we also will be having a total lunar eclipse. One problem we have here is the moon doesn’t rise in the southeast skies until 8:29 p.m. when the total eclipse begins. The sun sets at 8:34 p.m., so as we get the greatest eclipse at 9:11 p.m. it will still be twilight. And the moon will only be five degrees above the horizon. So, not the greatest viewing. However, we have another total lunar eclipse on Nov. 8 which will be much better for viewing — if skies are clear, that is.
We all love living in the great Pacific Northwest but planning for outdoor events and stargazing, clouds can sneak in from off the ocean at any time and sometimes quickly. As temperatures warm up over the weekend and more clouds and rain appear, there won’t be a risk of frost, which is good news. But we could use a little more in the way of sunshine for the flowers and gardens.
