Letter: Stand up to racism

By Ryan Dearinger, Sherwood, Ore.

As a native Vancouverite whose parents taught for over three decades in the Vancouver Public Schools, I want to applaud one of the district’s top educators for standing up and doing the right thing.

Skyview High School teacher and head baseball coach Seth Johnson should be commended for his leadership and integrity (“High school baseball teams take stand against discrimination,” The Columbian, April 25). To the Skyview High School student athletes to whom the vile, racist actions were directed: thank you for your courage and dignity. I also want to recognize the Skyview and Battle Ground student athletes for showing up as one voice against racial discrimination prior to their game at Curt Daniels Field in Vancouver on April 25.

What happened at Camas High School’s baseball field on April 20 has no place in sports or society. Efforts to rationalize it are as disappointing as the incident itself. Those involved need to learn from it. The time is always right to do what is right.
