Weather Eye: Clouds, showers on tap this week

That March leprechaun must have read my column Sunday and thought he would pull a fast one on me. I think he may have had a little something to do with pushing the thermometer up to 70 degrees during the dinner hour on Sunday. No worries, however, we take it in good fashion. I mean a month of March without a 70-degree day?

The last few days of the month will see plenty of clouds and some showers are likely on Wednesday. Thursday looks partly sunny as does Friday. Unsettled weather may arrive over the weekend and looking at extended forecast charts, spring break for the county could have some shower activity. Darn those April showers anyway.

I must admit, I am enjoying afternoon highs in the 60s, aren’t you? Our average high this week is 58 degrees, and our average low temperature is finally out of the 30s at 40 degrees. On this date in 1923 we managed a high of 81 degrees. Wow, that was almost 100 years ago. I also remember a cool spell back in 1977 where we had a hard freeze with 25 degrees.

It is getting where the downtown portion of Vancouver is almost past the average last frost date. Areas north of Mill Plain wait until later in April and early May further out in the colder locations. We are getting there day by day toward warmer weather.

Are you enjoying the longer daylight hours in the evening? The sun is setting after 7:30 p.m. now and on April 18 it will set after 8 p.m. Spring will be running at a fast pace at that point.

Last year on this date, winter was still hanging on with some chilly rain showers with snowflakes mixing in. Areas about 800 feet and higher had sticking snow. Judy Weber one mile west of View had a little snow on the ground. Fortunately, temperatures were at or above freezing so no problems that I heard of unless you were much higher in elevation. She added to her observation, “It snowed which makes it feel like February, but it really is March. My peas are up and the first crop of greens are growing in raised beds.”

Yes, March is a fickle month.
