Weather Eye: Sunshine, overnight lows in 20s expected later in week

Oh, such heavenly sunshine gracing our skies on Monday, however, winter-like low temperatures are keeping the landscape white with frost each morning. Today we have cool showers with generally less than a quarter of an inch here in the city and perhaps higher amounts in the foothills. Cold air aloft arrives later today with snow down to 1,000 feet or lower tonight and early Wednesday but then the precipitation will be fleeting off well to our east.

Thank goodness today’s weather system is fast moving so we can enjoy more sunshine Wednesday through Friday. Overnight lows will be cool with lows Wednesday morning dipping down into the 20s around Clark County. Protect outside tender plants.

The month of March behind the scenes is gathering the water brigade and will be sending storms this weekend and beyond. It will be wetter, but with clouds and southwesterly breezes we trade subfreezing temperatures at night to 40 degrees or better. Our highs approach seasonal temperatures in the mid-50s. Always a tradeoff it seems, doesn’t it?

With the sun setting after 6 p.m. now and with daylight saving time this Sunday, we push that to after 7 p.m. That will inch us along to bringing on a touch of spring fever. I’ve had many reports mentioning the rhapsody chorusing of the frogs in the wetlands. For such a small, short-bodied tailless amphibian they can sure bellow it out. Always amazes me when the weather is to their liking, and they perform.

I don’t want to jump the gun, but the National Climate Service has issued their summer outlook for the Northwest. They are calling for a 50 percent chance of having temperatures above average. Hopefully no 100 degrees and above weather like last year. They say we have equal chances of above or below average precipitation. A pleasant summer would be nice.

Some brief folklore —French proverbs say no two days in March are alike, and don’t go barefoot in March. Where do these old saying come from? And in March of 1879, Seattle recorded nearly 12 inches of rain with 11.92 inches.
