Weather Eye: Mostly dry weekend ahead as rain begins to taper off

The last day of February gave us quite a deluge, with nearly 2 inches of rain (1.79 inches) here in the city and 3 inches or more in our foothills. Vancouver’s rainfall for last month went into the record books with 3.06 inches compared to the average of 3.77 inches. If it weren’t for that pineapple express, we would have ended up way below average.

Our average high temperature last month was 51 degrees, which for once matches the expected average high of 51 degrees. That doesn’t occur often. I wouldn’t say March arrived like a lion, as I couldn’t find a wind gust of over 10 mph on the hourly reports for Vancouver. We did manage to pick up .42 of an inch of rain but most of that came in the early morning hours.

Looking ahead through this weekend we will have more dry weather than wet so if any showers develop, they will be light. Our high temperatures will hover around the 50- to 55-degree mark, which is close to average for early March. It is possible this “dry spell” will last for the next week or so. March heard us say calm down and it is doing that for us. We will have some sunny periods and I look forward to those bright yellow daffodils popping their heads skyward again.

Did you hear the frogs the other night? With all the wet ground, puddles, and mild temperatures, they are welcoming spring for us. Tuesday as March arrived it signaled the first day of meteorological spring for us weather and climate folks. Glad to chat in springlike terms rather than wait for the calendar to catch up.

Frosts are still common; after all, technically the calendar says winter, right? With the drier weather ahead, we still can get frost conditions in the early morning hours. The last frosts of the season for the greater Vancouver area are in April and in most of the outlying areas it can be well into May. We will see lows the next several nights in the 30s.

Enjoy the rest of the week and weekend and we will chat on Sunday.
