Weather Eye: Cooler weather moving in; will July 4 be boom or bust?

I know there are plenty of you that like the hot weather, but I am hoping we enjoy a summer with seasonal high temperatures. That would be in the upper 70s to mid-80s. Three days in the 90s are more than enough for many of my readers.

Saturday Vancouver had 93 degrees, Sunday 97 degrees and Monday, 93 degrees as of 5 p.m. And thank goodness, no record highs, we did that last year and those will gather cobwebs in the record books for years to come, I bet.

Today and most of the week we should see varying amounts of morning clouds and partly to mostly sunny skies in the afternoons. Wednesday could have clouds linger longer. Our highs will be a bit cooler than average, mainly in the 70s and then low 80s Thursday and Friday.

OK, the big questions are what will the weather decide to do over the three-day holiday weekend? Medium-range forecast models are divided on the subject. A cold pool of air — a trough of low pressure — will slide down from the north and will be close to our coastline. The question is how close? Some say close enough for plenty of clouds and drizzle or even light showers and highs struggling to make it in the low 70s. Others keep it anchored off the coastline and present us with mostly sunny skies and highs near normal, which is 82 degrees now. I think this calls for a coin toss.

We’ll know more in Thursday’s column. I shake my head with every holiday weekend that approaches as it always seems like a difficult forecast to make. Like I said, it’s early, things will change so let’s hope for a fair weather Fourth. Most of them are pleasant, but we’ll see.

We have officially logged in three 90-degree high temperatures so far and we on average have about 14 of them each summer. So, likely more to come. A lion’s share occurs in August.

Our rainfall for June stands at 3.22 inches and unless we squeeze some drizzle out of the clouds the next day or two that will go into the record books as another wetter-than-average month.

Take good care and we’ll chat on Thursday. Enjoy the cooler temperatures.
