Weather Eye: This week could see our area’s longest dry spell of the year

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. Going to have a barbecue today? Let someone else do the grilling and relax. Last year, it was a 90-degree day.

Although we had scattered showers around the region Saturday and will again today, high pressure will build inland, and we could see our longest dry spell of the year this week. It will be typical June fair weather, with morning clouds and afternoon sunshine most days. Highs in the hazy afternoons will be in the 70s.

I can hardly imagine an entire week without measurable rainfall, but if forecast models are correct, this will be the longest stretch of days without rain since early February. I see the garden rejoicing and growing.

The morning clouds and afternoon sunshine are typical of June. I’ll be glad to see such weather return.

We topped the 3-inch mark Friday in Vancouver; our rainfall for the month now stands at 3.14 inches. Maybe we will luck out with the dry weather this week and extend that to the end of the month. That 3.14 is way above average already.

Looking over weather records this weekend, I noticed that on June 18, 2016, the Long Beach Peninsula had two waterspouts and a funnel cloud. More feisty June weather.

In my column last year at this time, we were expecting several days in the 90s and looking ahead to highs over 100 degrees. Little did we know we would roast at 115 degrees at the end of June.

The summer solstice is Tuesday, the astronomical first day of summer. The meteorological first day of summer was June 1. Summer officially begins at 2:14 a.m. Tuesday. We’ll chat about that then.
