Letter: Extremists on both political sides

Recently I received an email from my Democratic senator encouraging my support for unrestricted access to abortion. This is not unlike emails I get from my Republican congresswoman that are designed to bolster whatever position she is taking.

In reality, I rarely find myself in agreement with any of my elected officials when they take knee-jerk, ideologically based stances that won’t resolve the problems they claim to address.

The right-wing call for unrestricted access to guns of any type in the name of the Second Amendment is just as untenable and impractical as the left-wing call for unrestricted access to abortion during every stage of pregnancy in the name of “reproductive rights.”

Unfortunately, our political leaders stake out the most extreme positions on key issues, leaving those of us seeking a middle ground to simply stand by and watch the nonsensical and self-defeating drama that they induce.

Reason and common sense are frequently absent from the thinking of our elected officials. As the Jan. 6 committee hearings demonstrate with former President Donald Trump and his most loyal toadies, political leaders just want you to believe everything they say is true because they assume you are too slow-witted and passive to question them.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
