Letter: AR-15 is natural evolution

The AR-15 (ArmaLite Rifle) is often referred to a “weapon of war” and an “assault rifle.” The reality is no military uses this rifle. Yet many are deceived by its appearance without understanding the function of these features.

The perforated enclosure around the front is there to prevent burning of the hands as friction heats the barrel. The pistol grip and thumb hole merely allow a natural and comfortable grasp near the trigger guard. The suitcase handle on top is a convenient way to carry rather than over the shoulder or a leather side sling. A muzzle suppressor (no such thing as a silencer) lessens the exit sounds to prevent hearing loss. The folding stock shortens the rifle length for easier storage. Black coloring only reduces distracting reflection.

These lightweight modern sporting rifles may look intimidating but they are just the natural evolution of gun technology replacing heavy, bolt-action, wood-stocked rifles of the past.
