Letter: Put universal health care on ballot

By Mike Benefiel, Bremerton
Published: June 11, 2022, 6:00am

Help put universal health care for all on the Washington ballot by signing a petition for Initiative 1471.

We all know that our health care system is broken and costing all of us too much. High premiums, deductibles and co-pays for those that have insurance; bankrupting costs for those tens of thousands without insurance. The worst is that the insurance corporations dictate which doctors, hospitals and treatments you can get and they deny about 25 percent of claims for some patients.

A single-payer, universal health care system like I-1471 would cover all Washington residents with great coverage with no cost at the point of service, no deductibles and no co-pays. It will save those insured thousands of dollars each. These savings are possible by eliminating the exorbitant profits and the inefficiencies of 99 different insurers with hundreds of different policies. It will eliminate the taxpayer burden of subsidizing current policies via Cascade Care.

Please help get this initiative on the Washington ballot by signing an I-1471 petition or better yet, helping gather signatures at wholewashington.org/volunteer.
