Weather Eye: June forecast to be cooler, wetter than average

Although it was mostly dry on Monday, clouds persisted and kept our humidity levels high. Kind of muggy? Yes, but you have not seen anything yet. Is that a warning or heads up? Yep. More sunshine today, but still some clouds and humidity. Same on Wednesday, but Tuesday will be the warmest day close to, if not a degree or two, over 80 degrees.

Most of Thursday appears to be dry and warm at this point, but clouds and rain may fall before midnight. Forecast charts show an impressive stream of moisture moving up from the southwest. Yes, you guessed it, the pineapple express rides again.

If this develops and locates over us, it will be unprecedented for June. A couple of inches of rain could fall somewhere. And the humidity? It would be high, really high. And if the moderate to heavy rain falls upon us, afternoon temperatures Friday and Saturday will still hover in the low 70s.

This will be an ever-changing weather pattern as these atmospheric rivers usually are. We’ll take another look in Thursday’s column. So far in June we have 1.01 inches of rain in the official gauge in Vancouver. More than that in other locations in Clark County. If we are in the bull’s-eye Friday and Saturday, we could push that total to 3 inches.

They issued the extended weather outlook for the rest of the month Monday, calling for cooler than average and wetter than normal. Nothing new there. With all the moisture, the slugs are devouring my begonias. Time to fight back.

I will add I am not 100 percent certain that we will get such a period of heavy rain at the end of the week, but I cannot discount the forecast models. So, stay tuned. You’ll be hearing plenty about it on television news and social media applications.

Will this be the summer of the green tomato, someone asked me? That is rare, the last summer like that was in 1983 thanks to El Nino. I can tell you the grass is growing nicely. A friend posted online that on his last cut he had 19.5 bags of grass.
