Weather Eye: Enjoy next few days, because heat dome likely to arise

No need to tell you it was another hot day on Wednesday, with the thermometer reading 90 degrees at 5 p.m. Tuesday’s high topped out at 90 degrees but the warmest so far this month was 95 degrees on July 11.

Elsewhere around the Evergreen State late afternoon temperatures were in the 80s from Bellingham to the northern fringes of Clark County and closer to 90 along the river. In the Columbia Basin it hovered in the low 100s and that is perfect weather for something I really enjoy. If you know me, you guessed it: local watermelons. I can taste them now. It won’t be long. Nothing like Northwest fruits and vegetables basking in summer sunshine.

Not much has changed since we chatted on Tuesday. A little cooler weather to bring us back to “normal” temperatures or a little above through Saturday. Then we warm up well into the hot category. You have heard about or seen the excessive heat near the Four Corners region extending into the middle states.

Forecast models indicate that hot air mass will retrograde our way and set up a heat dome of sorts over the Pacific Northwest. It’s going to get hot, folks. The big question is how much and how long. It will for sure rise into the upper 90s and perhaps a few days of 100 to 105 degrees if everything comes together in the atmosphere.

Of course, most of us hope things don’t come together, especially with memories of 115 degrees still lingering in our minds. I certainly don’t see that happening but hey, anything over 100 is way too much. Let’s hope we remain in the 90s. We’ll take another look at the next batch of warmth in Sunday’s column.

The ocean beaches will be crowded with visitors no doubt, as that would be the place to go next week. Heading any other direction will only keep you in the sweatbox, even in the Puget Sound area. Looking closer at details next week, it could be an extended period of warm to hot weather as high pressure may keep our natural air condition at bay over the ocean waters and along the sandy beaches.

Take good care and enjoy the “seasonal” temperature the next few days.
