A Mountain View High School student accused of bringing a knife to Heritage High School on Friday and cutting a student and himself during a fight appeared Monday in Clark County Superior Court.
Xavier Echevarria, 16, of Vancouver appeared on suspicion of first-degree assault and possessing a dangerous weapon on school grounds. Despite facing the allegations in adult court, Echevarria is being held in juvenile detention.
His bail was set at $20,000, and he is scheduled to be arraigned March 11.
Clark County sheriff’s deputies responded at about 10:40 a.m. to the high school at 7825 N.E. 130th Ave. A student showed deputies a video of the fight that captured a teenager, later identified as Echevarria, swinging a knife at a student. Echevarria is seen swinging both fists at the student, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Echevarria suffered a large laceration to his left arm, which was self-inflicted from his knife and required 16 stitches. Another student was cut with the knife on his left side; court records don’t describe the extent of the injury. Deputies said the knife was 6 inches long and hooked, court records state.
