A Mountain View High School student was taken to a local hospital after being cut on the arm with his own knife during a fight Friday morning at Heritage High School, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded at 10:40 a.m. to reports of an assault with a knife on school grounds, 7825 N.E. 130th Ave., the agency said in a news release.

Several Heritage students began fighting over an allegation made by another student. The Mountain View student came to Heritage with a knife to support one of the Heritage students, the sheriff’s office said.

During the fight, the Mountain View student suffered a laceration to his arm by the knife he brought to the school. His injury is not life-threatening. A Heritage student also suffered a minor injury, which was not from the knife, the news release states.

The sheriff’s office said it is unknown how the Mountain View student was allowed on Heritage’s campus. The agency said it does not believe the fight is connected to last week’s gang-related shooting near the high school.

The school district said it is cooperating with the law enforcement investigation.

Heritage Principal Derek Garrison sent a letter to families Friday afternoon summarizing the incident and encouraging students and staff to keep safety procedures in mind.

“We encourage a ‘watch and warn’ culture in our schools and invite students and families to share information with us so that we can prevent incidents like this from occurring in the future,” Garrison wrote.

Beginning Monday, there will be extra security at Heritage, and it will remain in place for at least the next two weeks, Evergreen Public Schools spokesman Craig Birnbach said.

“We are exploring every possibility to work with local law enforcement, students, parents and other community members to keep our students and school safe,” he said.
