TACOMA — After pinning his first-round opponent, Union’s Jordin Jimenez pointed to his family in the upper deck of the Tacoma Dome.
To be cheered from such heights on the state’s biggest wrestling stage is something no competitor at Mat Classic XXXIII took for granted on Friday.
The first day of the state wrestling championships was as much celebration as competition for a sport that has faced more uncertainty than any in the COVID era.
Many wondered whether Mat Classic would be shelved for a second year after the sport went on a three-week pause in mid-December after COVID outbreaks were linked to wrestling tournaments.
For wrestlers like Jimenez, the wait for Mat Classic felt extra long. Two years ago, his quest to reach the state tournament as a freshman was derailed by an elbow injury at regionals.
Having his sophomore season reduced to a handful of outdoor tournaments was a frustrating ordeal for someone with a goal of competing with the state’s best.
“It broke a little bit of my spirit,” Jimenez said. “But it also helped me build by motivation. It put me in a vision quest. Who wants it more?”
For two years, Jimenez visualized what his first-round match in the Class 4A 126-pound division would feel like. Getting a second-period pin against North Creek’s Mauricio Cabrera made it better than he imagined.
“Ever since freshman year I’ve had a burning urge to feel what state is like,” Jimenez said. “This is way different than any of those other big tournaments. It’s like a dream come true.”
The energy of Mat Classic surged through Prairie junior Alex Ford, who bounced to his feet like the mat was spring-loaded after pinning his opponent in the Class 3A 160-pound quarterfinals.
Ford had been waiting for his first Mat Classic for far longer than two years.
“I’ve been looking forward to this since I was a little kid,” Ford said. “My brothers all wrestled and none of them placed at state. I’m just thrilled that I can place this year. I’m so happy.”
Ford is joined in Saturday’s semifinals by teammates Mason Frei (152 pounds) and Faith Tarrant (235), who each earned a pair of pins Friday. They are among many wrestlers who, after seeing a senior class unable to end their careers at the Tacoma Dome, believe they are wrestling for more than themselves.
“For the people that didn’t get to wrestle last year, I want to make it up for them,” Ford said.
Union advanced four wrestlers to the semifinals, the most of any Clark County school. Noah Koyama (113 pounds), Dylan Dalgord (120), Elijah Cassidy (145) and his sister Niah Cassidy (120) are all alive for titles.
One favorite to claim a state title is Mountain View’s CJ Hamblin at 170 pounds. The Oregon State-bound senior secured two early pins in his quest to become the 98th three-time champion in state history. Teammate Nathan Wadleigh is also in the semifinals at 145 pounds.
Skyview advanced two underclassmen to the semifinals. Freshman Jon Schoenlein earned two quick pins at 160 pounds and sophomore Owen Pritchard notched a pin and a 16-0 technical fall.
Washougal has two 2A semifinalists in Caleb Davis (113) and Lucas Golphenee (120). La Center has two 1A semifinalists in Malachi Wallway (120) and Austin Mattson (160).
Hockinson’s Cody Wheeler advanced to the 2A 195-pound semifinals.
