Weather Eye: We’ll see mostly sunny skies through Sunday

We usually get a week or so of pleasant weather every February, it seems, going back looking at the record books. We can also get some cold and snowy weather. However, no snow this year is certain, and this week will go into the record books as a continuation of our unseasonably dry winter weather.
We topped out at 56 degrees Wednesday under sunny afternoon skies. Took a while for some locations to burn off those pesky, low clouds. Today through Sunday we will have mostly sunny skies and highs around 60 degrees and perhaps a few degrees higher by the weekend. Splendid weather.
The nighttime hours are still on the long side, and with calm winds, frost will be present. We’ll have a chilly start to our days. The next rain looks like it will be on Valentine’s Day, and then back to mild and dry weather next week.
I can tell you I don’t see any lowland snow the remainder of the month, and although we can still get wet snow in March, nothing will impede our lives that much.
Unless you are planning to go to the mountain for skiing or traveling over the passes, you can remove the studded or winter tires and go back to a smooth quiet ride. I’m not going to travel to higher elevations, so I will do my seasonal tire changeover early this year.
Look at these temperatures recorded Wednesday: Brookings, Ore., 80 degrees, mid- to upper 60s in central Oregon, and on the west slopes of the Oregon Cascades, in the 60s. It was cooler in Puget Sound and in Eastern Washington but still above normal in many locations. In Dawson Creek in northern British Columbia, it was sunny and 52 degrees and partly sunny and 40 degrees at Whitehorse in the Yukon.
So where is all the cold air? Fairbanks, Alaska, was below zero Wednesday with Anchorage, Alaska, basking in the teens. The cold air stays up there although the weak weather system Monday will bring some snow down to 2,000 feet in our mountains. Then back to dry weather.
Enjoy the late winter warmth and sunshine.
