Community members will run or walk an “Honor Mile” on Friday evening in memory of slain Vancouver police Officer Donald Sahota.

The run will kick off at 7 p.m. at the track at Hudson’s Bay High School, 1601 E. McLoughlin Blvd. The lights will come on at 6:30 p.m., according to organizer Kindness 911. Buildings and rest rooms at the high school will not be open.

The local event was inspired by a Florida teenager, Zechariah Cartledge, who runs in honor of first responders killed nationwide. Cartledge ran in Sahota’s memory Tuesday night.

“Oftentimes after a significant loss, as our community has just suffered, it is that very community that wants to do something to process all they are experiencing or show their support for those directly impacted,” Kindness 911 founder Jason Hattrick said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a civilian or first responder; we all go through this, me included.”

Kindness 911 organized a similar event in July in honor of slain Clark County sheriff’s Sgt. Jeremy Brown. Hundreds completed that mile at Alki Middle School in Salmon Creek.
