Prep basketball: Shorthanded Skyview girls have just enough to beat Central Catholic

Skyview, Camas girls both advance in Portland Holiday Classic

The Skyview girls basketball team finished with just the five players it had on the court, but that was still enough for the Storm to beat Central Catholic 58-41 in the Sapphire bracket of the Portland Holiday Classic on Wednesday at Grant High School.

The Storm started the game without two injured players. Skyview was left with just five active players after Sam Groesbeck and TaRyan Hamstreet fouled out in the third quarter.

But leading 43-29 after three quarter, Lainey Phillips, Kaydence Stratton, Kiera Parks and Jordan Labrador-Hallett each scored in the fourth quarter as the Storm widen their lead.

Labrador-Hallett led Skyview with 18 points. Parks added nine and Stratton had eight.

Skyview plays La Salle of Milwaukie, Ore., or Mountain View of Bend, Ore., at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Grant High School.

CAMAS 42, TUALATIN (Ore.) 37 — Riley Sanz and Keirra Thompson knocked down six consecutive free throws to seal the victory late in the Diamond Bracket of the Portland Holiday Classic at Grant High School.

Camas built a 28-15 lead at halftime, but then struggled from the field in the second half as Tualatin was able whittled the Papermakers’ lead to as little as two points.

“We struggled to make shots today,” Camas coach Scott Thompson said. “It felt a little like holiday rust.”

Camas was 2 for 14 from 3-point range, but found success when the Papermakers got the ball inside to Addison Harris, who was 10 for 15 from the field and finished with a team-high 22 points and 13 rebounds.

Camas will play Clackamas (Ore.) at 5 p.m. Thursday at Franklin High School.

SILAS 49, KELSO 42 — Lexi Grumbois scored all 11 of her points in the fourth quarter, but Kelso lost a late lead when Grumbois and Madalynn Moe fouled out at the T-Town Throwdown in Tacoma.

Bregan Ruhland filled the gap by scoring 18 points. However, Silas converted 16 of 18 free throws to win the game.

Kelso wraps up play in the tournament against Auburn at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

EVERGREEN 56, FORT VANCOUVER 20 — Christina Nguyen scored 18 points as the Plainsmen won their opener at the Fort Vancouver Holiday Classic.

Kimora Ross and Adrain Wright each added 11 points for Evergreen (5-3)

ASTORIA (Ore.) 56, MARK MORRIS 37 — The Monarchs couldn’t overcome a slow start against the host team at the Vince Dulcich Tourmament in Astoria, Ore.

Mark Morris (6-4) trailed 19-8 after the first quarter and 33-16 at halftime. Kea Makaiwi led the Monarchs with nine points.

Boys basketball

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS (Ohio) 83, SKYVIEW 65 — The Storm suffered their first loss of the season, falling at the Cactus Jam tournament in Phoenix.

After Cleveland Heights jumped out to an 8-0 lead, Skyview was able to get within four before Cleveland Heights took a 39-30 lead into halftime.

The Tigers stretched their lead to 19 in the second half, and the Storm’s late comeback fell short.

Demaree Collins led Skyview (7-1) with 25 points, and Malakai Weimer added 10.

After.a day off tomorrow, Skyview will play Central Bucks East of Doylestown, Penn., in the Cactus Division third-place game at 11 a.m. (PST) Friday at Sunnyslope High School in Phoenix.

PRAIRIE 67, STEILACOOM 59, OT — Bailey Kousonsavath hit 4 of 4 free throws in the overtime period as Prairie was 8 for 8 from the line in the extra period to win at the Burlington-Edision Winter Classic.

Kousonsavath finished with 20 points, and Cam Newsome scored 16.

Henry Moultrie scored all 11 of his points in the second half and overtime for the Falcons.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN (Ore.) 74, LA CENTER 46 — Austin Nixon scored 14 points but the Wildcats couldn’t keep pace in the second half at the Oregon Holiday Hoopfest in Bend. Ore.

Six-foot-11 Austin Maurer scored 10 of his 16 points in the second half for Cascade Christian, which led 30-22 at halftime.

La Center (3-5) will face Caldera of Bend in the consolation bracket Thursday.

CARLSBAD (Calif.) 85, UNION 61 — Yanni Fassilis scored 27 points but it wasn’t enough against a hometown opponent at the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic.

Kody Holcomb scored 13 points and Evan Manville added 11 points for Union (6-4).

Jake Hall scored 34 points and hit seven of Carlsbad’s 14 3-pointers. The Lancers led 33-16 after the first quarter.

FOSS 76, EVERGREEN 61 — Landon Rayner scored 15 points and Quincy Caston added 12 points, but the Plainsmen couldn’t overcome a tough hometown opponent at the T-Town Throwdown in Tacoma.

The Plainsmen (3-7) will face Yelm or Newport on Thursday.
