Girls basketball: Ava Smith leads Union to win over Gig Harbor

Ava Smith had a team-best 20 points, including hitting half of Union’s 3-pointers, in a 68-57 non-league home victory over 3A Gig Harbor on Tuesday.

Smith had eight points to start the third quarter as part of a 12-2 Union scoring run to push its lead to 20 points. Union’s largest lead came at 52-27 with 1:51 left in the third.

Freshman Brooklynn Haywood added 14 and Rowyn Riley had 13 for the Titans, who improved to 6-0.

Gig Harbor’s Taylor Schwab had a game-high 24 to lead the Tides.

HERITAGE 67, SELAH 61 — Keanna Salavea scored nine of her game-high 19 points in a decisive third-quarter as Heritage earned a win in the GESA Winter Shootout in Wenatchee.

Mariah Bibens added eight points in the third quarter as Heritage opened a 54-48 advantage that the Timberwolves held onto in the final period.

Bibens made four 3-pointers to finish with 18 points for Heritage.

MOUNTAIN VIEW 53, DOMINGUEZ (Calif.) 41 — Katelyn Henderson scored 20 points and Nina Peterson added 14 as Mountain View picked up its first win in the Emerald Bracket of the Tarkanian Class in Las Vegas with a win over Dominguez of Compton, Calif.

Henderson scored 14 of her points in the second half as the Thunder pulled away.

Mountain View will face Crossroads Christian of Corona, Calif., at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Liberty High School in Henderson, Nev.

REGIS (Ore.) 46, KING’S WAY CHRISTIAN 35 — After a hot start, King’s Way Christian went cold in the second quarter and could not recover in a non-league road loss at Regis of Stayton, Ore.

The Knights jumped out to a 17-4 lead after one quarter, but found themselves tied 19-19 at halftime. The Rams pulled away in the third quarter.

Ella Zimmerman led King’s Way with eight points. Bridget Quinn added seven points and seven rebounds, and Izzy Hill had six points and seven rebounds.

SETON CATHOLIC 52, TOLEDO 35 — Keira Williams hit three 3-pointers in a big second quarter for the Cougars and finished with 14 points.

Hanna Jo Hammerstrom scored eight of her nine points in the first quarter to get Seton going. The Cougars put the pressure on in the second, outscoring Toledo 21-8.

Anna Mooney added eight of her 13 points in the third quarter as Seton improved to 6-1.

LA CENTER 40, FORT VANCOUVER 39 (OT) — The Wildcats claimed their first win of the season after prevailing in overtime against the Trappers.

Shaela Bradley led La Center with 18 points, Adyson Maddock chipped in nine points and Talia Wise hit a big 3-pointer in overtime.

After falling behind 11-4 after one quarter, Fort came back in the second half to send the game to an extra period. Trian Clark led the Trappers with 15 points.
