C-Tran’s board of directors approved an extension of the transit agency’s reduced fares indefinitely Tuesday night, keeping local bus fares at $1 per ride, down from $1.80, and express fares at $2.50 per ride, down from $3.85, for adults.
“It makes our service more accessible for all of our riders, really,” said Eric Florip, C-Tran manager of communications, marketing and customer experience. “This is something we’re able to do, and it’s something we want to do to be able to give back to our riders in that way.”
The decision comes at a time when Portland’s public transportation service, TriMet, is considering raising fares for the first time in a decade, from $2.50 to $2.80 for the regular adult fare.
C-Tran can continue to keep its fares low because a majority of the agency’s revenue comes from local sales taxes, which have been higher than budgeted the past few years, Florip said.
