Specialist Michael Mataraza IV of Vancouver graduated at the top of his class on Dec. 1 at the United States Army Training Center, Fort Jackson, S.C.

Only eight awards were presented to 937 soldiers in the basic training cycle. Mataraza received two: Battalion Winner of the Cycle and Soldier Leader of the Cycle.

Mataraza will continue to serve at Joint Base Lewis-McChord for the Army National Guard.
