Boys basketball roundup: Heritage holds off Evergreen in overtime, 62-59

Vernon Onick’s go-ahead lay-in with 20 seconds to play in overtime, and Juan Zacarias’ free throws with 2.3 second gave the Heritage boys basketball team a 62-59 win at Evergreen in 3A Greater St. Helens League play Friday.

Evergreen’s Lenny Fierro tied the game with a basket in the final 18 seconds of regulation.

The only time Evergreen had a led in the game came with 36.4 seconds remaining in OT after Arthur Ban’s put-back made it 59-58.

Then Onick, who had 18 points, answered with his go-ahead basket.

Evergreen’s last two possessions were a turnover and a half-court heave at the buzzer.

Heritage (4-0, 2-0 3A GSHL) was led in scoring by Jarius Brown’s 22 points.

Arthur Ban had 17 points for Evergreen (1-3, 0-2), Dez Daniel had 13, and Fierro had 10.

CAMAS 78, OREGON CITY 50 — Four Camas players scored in double figures led by Beckett Currie’s 17 points as the Papermakers beat Oregon City at the Mountainside tournament in Beaverton, Ore.

Camas (2-1) also got 15 points from Jace VanVoorhis, 11 from Josh Dabasinskas and 10 from Matthew Chillian.

The Papermakers, which made nine 3-pointers, slammed the door shut with a 25-11 fourth quarter.

MOUNTAIN VIEW 62, KING’S WAY CHRISTIAN 45 — Senior Jacob Martin scored 13 of his career-high 19 points in the third quarter in the Thunder’s non-league home win over the 1A Knights.

Martin hit three 3-pointers as part of an 18-point scoring third quarter for Mountain View. Isaiah Vargas chipped in with 16.

Ryan Tyler led the visiting Knights with 18. King’s Way Christian also went 11 of 11 at the free-throw line.

COLUMBIA RIVER 75, FORT VANCOUVER 34 — Ari Richardson (14 points) was one of three Rapids to score in double figures in Columbia River’s 2A GSHL victory over Fort Vancouver.

Columbia River scored 23 points each of the first three quarters to build a 69-25 advantage heading into the final eight minutes. Niko Valdez added 11 points and Adam Reeder chipped in 10 for the Rapids. David Smith-Myles paced the Trappers with 11.

HOCKINSON 57, HUDSON’S BAY 55 — Daniel Fedorenko and Igor Povahniuk scored 12 points a piece as the Hawks held off the Eagles for a 2A GSHL victory.

Hockinson outscored Hudson’s Bay 21-8 in the third quarter. Izek Finn scored a game-high 23 points to pace the Eagles.

MARK MORRIS 73, RIDGEFIELD 69 — Kobe Parlin’s game-high 34 points sparked the Monarchs to a 2A GSHL victory.

Ridgefield was led by Cole Chester’s 31 points and Colten Castro added 16.

CASTLE ROCK 65, WAHKIAKUM 57 — Trystin Marin had what first-year Castle Rock coach Andrew Johnson called “one of his best games as a Rocket” scoring a game-high 30 points in the Rockets’ nonleague victory.

“He was cool and calm under pressure,” Johnson said, “and made touch shots when we needed.”

Lane Partridge had 14 and James Montgomery added 13 for the Rockets.
