WASHOUGAL — A woman died at an area hospital, and her husband remains in critical condition after a Thursday afternoon shooting at a home in the 30000 block of Southeast Sunset View Road, just outside Washougal city limits.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office called the incident a “murder-suicide attempt,” and investigators don’t believe there’s any threat to the community.

Deputies responded at 1:04 p.m. to reports of shots heard in the area. A man who called 911 about the gunshots said he was going to investigate.

The caller hung up, and dispatch was unable to get in contact with him again, the sheriff’s office said.

A responding sheriff’s sergeant was able to see inside the house and saw a person on the floor and a man slumped over sitting near the kitchen counter. Deputies, along with officers from the Washougal and Camas police departments, arrived to find a man and woman inside who appeared to suffer gunshot wounds to the head, the sheriff’s office said.

Officers provided medical assistance to both people, whom they identified as Roberto Rossi, 78, and Carol L. Rossi, 73, both of Washougal, before they were taken via ambulance to an area hospital. Carol Rossi died at the hospital; Roberto Rossi was listed in critical condition, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office’s Major Crimes Unit is continuing to investigate.
