Weather Eye: Weekend will bring break in heat, but more is on its way

The heat is still on. The temperatures went up quickly on Wednesday, with Vancouver reporting 90 degrees at 1 p.m. Too hot for this guy. As of my writing Wednesday, it was 97 degrees here in town.

I expect another hot one today, with highs in the mid-90s. We will have more clouds streaming up from California, and as I mentioned the other day, a spotty thunderstorm or sprinkles are possible. If the clouds are thick enough today, it could hold us down a few degrees cooler. However, the humidity will be through the roof. A muggy day.

The good news will be cooler temperatures Friday through Monday. Friday and Saturday’s highs will be in the 80s as cooler ocean air penetrates the area. Looking ahead, though, it appears likely that we’ll have another heat wave by midweek next week, with highs shooting well into the 90s and maybe 100 degrees. We are not finished with the hot weather, folks.

Wednesday was day 20 with a high of 90 degrees or higher. I’m sure we will add many more days before summer officially ends. Are you keeping up with the watering? Between that and electric bills if you have AC, it is going to be a spendy month due to the hot weather.

Our overnight low early this morning was expected to remain in the mid- to upper 60s, making it tough for sleeping with only fans and open windows. But after all, it is summer. It reminds me of when I was young raising a family, many days and nights when the fans in the house ran 24/7. No AC back then. Yes, hot August nights memories. Sometimes we slept out in the backyard, which was cooler than inside the house, believe it or not.

There are only 13 days left in the month before the weather and climate folks turn the page to the autumn season. Sept. 1 is the first meteorological day of fall. Where did the summer go? Are you growing pumpkins? Are they turning orange yet? Seems the older I get, the faster time goes. And the heat wears a person down as well.

We’ll chat on Sunday, and I’ll update you on more of the hot stuff.
