Weather Eye: Marine air cools us down; heat returns this weekend

How do you spell relief? Marine air. Finally, enough cooler air off the Pacific made it to Clark County to keep our high Wednesday at 85 degrees. Some would say that’s perfect. Others, maybe not.

Today we have more ocean air with morning clouds, and highs will tend to be 5 to 10 degrees lower, bringing us our first below-average high in a long while. If the marine deck is thick enough, we may see areas of mist or drizzle before the clouds break up later in the day. Enjoy it while you can.

On Friday, skies will clear and we’ll see highs right about normal: 83 degrees. We should see another 90-degree day on Saturday. Sunday will be the warmest day of the short heatwave; it could reach the upper 90s to near 100 degrees. The heat will continue Monday before dropping back to the 80s next week.

There is a cutoff low spinning off Northern California that may affect our weather next week. If it moves close enough, we could have thunderstorms and even showers locally. If it remains where it is, highs next week will be hotter than in the 80s. We’ll keep a close eye on how things develop, so take next week’s forecast with a grain of salt.

It could be cooler, could be hotter. It could be dry or could be wet. Oh, I hate weather thinking that way. How many times have I used the term “pesky lows”? Too many to count. That is why we always keep the Weather Eye peeled for you.

A couple of old weather proverbs say that thunderstorms near the beginning of August are usually followed by others all month. Another adage says that if a heavy fog occurs in August, a hard frost will happen on the same day in October. These may be a stretch.

I like this Portuguese proverb: “August ripens, September gathers in; August bears the burden and September the fruit.”

Yep, the garden will peak this month, along with wonderful summer weather.
