Weather Eye: Chilly weather with occasional showers continue this week

We were blessed with a beautiful sunny day on Sunday and Vancouver reached 70 degrees for only the third time this year. We recorded 74 degrees on April 7 and 70 degrees on March 27. That’s it folks. No 70-degree weather on the horizon this week. We will be lucky to bump 60 degrees later this week.

The chilly weather with occasional showers will continue until months end on Saturday. The month of May begins where April left off, at least for now. We could see a thunderstorm and hail today as the air aloft cools more. Snow levels are back down to our higher foothills.

The official rain gauge in Vancouver Monday picked up 0.13 of an inch of rain as of 5 p.m. for a total of 4.29 inches for the month. If we get a few downpours this week, we could get close to record territory in the rain department but if not, we should be in at least the top five wettest Aprils.

We need the rain as January, February and March had below average rainfall totals. It is a good thing we are not in a drought category as in past years. However, farther south in Oregon things are much more dire.

Wednesday will be mostly dry but continued cool even with some sunny periods. Rain showers tick up on Thursday and again on Saturday. That wraps it up for April with those raindrops falling from the skies. On the flip side with the remaining days of the month, a killing frost is unlikely.

The old saying goes that April showers bring forth May flowers which is usually the case as the warmth of the season evolves. Some of those flowers may delay their blooms if May continues the colder than average weather.

Vancouver saw a burst of rain around the noon hour Monday, and did you see the heavy rain around 4 p.m.? It was a doozy. But with the nature of the showers, some of you may not have received much in your backyard rain gauge.

The grass finally got cut on Sunday afternoon and my car wash on the dry day Saturday is still shiny clean. OK, we will depart for now and chat again on Thursday. We’ll see if we can look further into May and have an idea what’s coming weather-wise. Take good care.
