Lace up your sneakers, stretch your legs and celebrate furry friends at the shelter, as well as those who take care of them.

The Humane Society for Southwest Washington’s annual 5K fundraiser is set to unfold between 9 and 11 a.m. May 7. This year, the event will be a hybrid; participants can walk or run wherever they choose or join others at Esther Short Park to weave through downtown Vancouver. Completion times can be submitted online.

It costs $45 to take part in the 5K, and kids 12 years old and younger enter for free with registered adults. Register online by May 6 at hssw.org/walk-run or in person the day of the event.

Those who want to support the cause but want to opt out on the activity can register to fundraise money for the shelter animals. The organization has raised about $101,800 of its $200,000 goal. Participants can receive prizes, such as sweatshirts or blankets, depending on how much funding they gather.
