Weather Eye: Vancouver’s cool, wet weather likely to linger all week

The Easter Bunny and Mother Nature may have worked things out for Saturday’s egg hunts, but eventually we saw heavy downpours, thunder, lightning and hail. And yes, wet snowflakes were in the air.

When will we get rid of those snowflakes, you ask? Well, the freezing levels should rise today ahead of another good storm arriving by Monday. Snow will fall at or above the mountain passes, where it should be this time of year, right?

Cooler air will follow the storm, with snow levels dropping to 2,000 feet, but I feel we won’t see any low-elevation snow this week. We may not get back to our normal high of 60 degrees until later this week. However, with some luck and sunshine today, we may hit 60.

Those April showers are in the forecast all week, but things look less clear for next weekend. Needless to say, a good amount of water has gone into the official gauge in Vancouver. As of 3 p.m. Saturday, the city had recorded 3.23 inches of precipitation this month, compared to the normal amount of 1.60 inches.

It has been quite cool as well. April has recorded 11 days with overnight lows in the 30s. Oh, how we would enjoy one of those 70-degree days with full sunshine. We will keep a sharp weather eye out for that.

The rest of April is forecast to remain cool, so don’t get too energetic about warm-weather planting. That snow on our foothills to the east could mean frost for several weeks, especially in the outlying suburbs. Wait until Mother’s Day.
