Residents escaped unharmed from a Monday night house fire in the Sunnyside neighborhood, according to the Vancouver Fire Department.

Firefighters were dispatched around 11:30 p.m. to the 8700 block of Northeast 76th Avenue. A homeowner reported that a smoke detector alerted him to a fire in his garage, a fire department news release states.

The first crew to arrive found a large amount of fire coming from the front of the house and began working to keep it from spreading, according to the news release.

When the residents were woken by the smoke detectors and ran out of the house, the homeowner closed the door behind them. The Vancouver Fire Department said this helped prevent the fire from spreading as quickly and meant crews extinguished the blaze faster.

Nine units from Vancouver Fire and one unit from Clark County Fire District 6 responded. Firefighters had the flames under control in about 12 minutes, the news release states.

No one was injured, the fire department said.

The fire department reminds people of the importance of working smoke detectors.
