A Vancouver man is accused of robbing an east Vancouver Walgreens at gunpoint in March.

Joseph D. McMains, 44, appeared April 8 in Clark County Superior Court on suspicion of first-degree assault and first-degree robbery. His bail was set at $150,000, and he is scheduled to be arraigned Friday.

A jail pre-booking sheet indicates McMains has “known, stated or observed mental health problems.”

Vancouver police responded at about 11 a.m. March 24 to the Walgreens at 6105 N.E. 114th Ave. The clerk told officers a man came in to buy a bottle of alcohol and gave her a $10 bill. When she opened the cash drawer, the man pulled out a revolver and repeatedly said, “Give me the cash,” according to a probable cause affidavit.

She was unsure if the gun was real, she said, but feared the man would shoot her if she didn’t follow his instructions, the affidavit says.

The clerk estimated she gave him between $200 and $300 before he ran from the store, court records state.

Police located the man using security from a nearby business and C-Tran. The affidavit states McMains’ date of birth matches the one on the driver’s license the suspect showed the clerk to buy the alcohol.
