GRASS VALLEY — Shahala Middle School library held an educational and community sci-fi fantasy event called READCON on March 24, the first big community event like this since before the pandemic. It was organized by teacher-librarian and Jedi Master Paul Warner and attended by hundreds, including middle school and elementary school students with their families, plus teachers, principals, district staff, two school board members, and the district’s new superintendent.

In addition to Lego builds, games and crafts, trivia and writing, robotics, and a big book fair, there were special guests. Darth Vader and The Mandalorian from the Star Wars 501st Legion were there to meet kids, pose for photos, and help the library raise donations for books for kids and Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
