Firefighters saved a house early Thursday morning in central Vancouver after a road crew, working near state Highway 500 and St. Johns Boulevard, saw smoke in the area.

The Vancouver Fire Department was dispatched around midnight to the area of Grand Boulevard and 34th Street. Engine 2 found a one-story house burning at 3405 Grand Blvd., according to a fire department news release.

Crews worked quickly to stop the fire from spreading into the attic and other areas of the house. Additional firefighters searched the house for any occupants, but no one was home, the news release states.

“The difficult fire was brought under control within 50 minutes,” the fire department said.

Twenty firefighters responded to the blaze. The Vancouver Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause.
