Battle Ground seeks community input on mobility experiences, barriers

BATTLE GROUND — The city of Battle Ground is seeking public input on a new Americans with Disabilities Act plan to address needed improvements to public facilities, such as curb ramps, push buttons, crosswalks and on-street parking.

The Mobility for All Community Survey will help the city better understand mobility experiences and challenges, according to a press release Wednesday. While the city says the ADA Transition Plan will benefit greatly from feedback from people with disabilities and those providing support, everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate.

The city began the process earlier this year with a physical inventory of pedestrian facilities to help identify accessibility gaps and barriers. The plan will guide when and where mobility improvements need to be made and will reach compliance with ADA requirements. The ADA requires a transition plan from public entities responsible for publicly owned buildings, parks, streets, roads and sidewalks.

“Obstacles, big and small, can make navigation difficult or impossible for members of our community. Some common examples are cracked or uneven sidewalks, lack of ramps or curbs at intersections, and obstructions in sidewalks,” communications manager Bonnie Gilberti said in the press release. “An online interactive reporting tool is available for community members to easily map and describe any of these obstacles.”

The survey and interactive reporting tool will be open through Oct. 10. A draft transition plan will be available for public review prior to formal adoption by the city council. The plan is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

For more information about the transition plan or survey, go to www.cityofbg.org/MobilityForAll. The page will be updated as progress is made and will include draft and final plans, according to the city.
