Union to picket Vancouver Public Schools headquarters

A union representing Vancouver Public Schools support staff plans to picket tonight at the district’s headquarters.

The Vancouver Association of Education Support Professionals will march at 5 p.m. at the Bates Center for Educational Leadership, 2921 Falk Road, adjacent to Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary School, according to a news release from the union. It claims the district has a duty to bargain over staffing levels and working conditions because students have returned to school full time during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier this month, Clark County Superior Court Judge Suzan Clark issued an order barring demonstrations that could “disrupt educational services” within a mile of any Vancouver school. So far, the order has not been enforced, despite at least one incident of after-school protesting at Skyview High School by groups opposed to mask mandates.
